Frisco fence permit rules
When you need a permit, how tall you can build, what to submit and what it costs.
When you need a permit
Frisco's Building Inspections FAQ says: "Fence Permits are required for all fences built, except when repairing or replacing a portion of the fence -- limited to two (2) sections or sixteen (16) feet." So swapping out a couple of storm-damaged panels usually doesn't need one, but replacing a whole run does.
How tall
From the same FAQ: fences "may be built up to eight (8) feet in height from the grade on the rear and side yards of the main structure. Fences built in front of the main structure may be built four (4') feet in height."
Where it can go
The FAQ adds that "All vision clips, access and maintenance (VAM) requirements must be observed. In no case can a fence or portion of any fence extend past any property line." Visibility rules matter most near driveways and street corners. Ask Building Inspections if your fence is near either.
What to submit
Frisco's Residential Alteration Submittal Requirements (Form 4038, February 2026) say to submit an online Residential Building Permit Application (Fence) with your property's plot plan (survey), clearly marking where the fence will go. The same form notes:
- "Some subdivisions require HOA approval." See HOA approval.
- A fence replacement around a residential pool has additional requirements. See pool fences.
Fees
| Permit | Fee |
|---|---|
| Fences | $75.00 |
| Retaining walls | $150.00 per wall ($300.00 per subdivision) |
| Screening walls | $150.00 per wall |
Who can pull it
Frisco's Contractor Registration page lists "fence contractors (including retaining walls and screening walls)" among the trades that must register with the city before a permit is issued. Ask any contractor whether they're registered with Frisco, and who's pulling the permit.
Before anything goes in the ground: Texas811 describes itself as the free one-call system in Texas, and says Texas law requires excavators to contact 811 at least two business days before digging, excluding weekends and holidays.
