Fence gates and driveway gates in Frisco
Walk gates, drive gates and openers: what they cost and which rules apply.
A gate gets more wear than any other part of a fence. Gates sag, latches stop catching, and drive gates add motors and controls. Here is what published sources say gates cost, and the city rules that apply to them.

Walk and side gates
HomeAdvisor's fence cost guide (June 2026) lists basic side gates from $150, and $400 to $1,200 for premium materials. Width, material, hardware and whether the gate needs its own heavier posts all change the price.
Driveway gates
| Item | Published range |
|---|---|
| Automatic driveway gate, typical | $2,500 to $5,000 (average $3,160) |
| Manual driveway gate | About $1,500 to $4,000 |
| Swing gate | $840 to $6,000 |
| Sliding gate | $700 to $4,080 |
| Gate motor | $560 to $4,750 |
| Keypad | $250 to $650 |
| Safety sensors | $250 to $1,250 |
Automatic gates also need power at the gate, so ask whether an electrician is included.
Pool gates have strict rules
If the gate opens into a pool area, Frisco's residential pool enclosure requirements say "All pedestrian yard gates must have self-closing, self-latching gates and open away from the pool." If the latch release is less than 54 inches from the bottom of the gate, it must be on the pool side and at least 3 inches below the top. More on our pool fence page.
Permits for gates
- The Colony: "Any new fence or gate installation requires a permit," according to the city's permit sheet.
- Frisco: the FAQ requires permits for fences built, with a small-repair exception. As we read it, a gate built as part of a new fence falls under that fence's permit.
- HOAs often regulate gate style and placement. See HOA approval.
Fixing a sagging gate
A gate that drags usually has a loose hinge post, worn hinges, or a frame that has racked out of square. HomeGuide lists damaged fence posts at $250 to $600 each to repair; see fence repair. Ask the contractor whether the hinge post needs replacing or just bracing.
